THE BIG ASK

  • Matthew 7:7-11 (NIV) 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 9  “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

On Sunday we talked about the passage and how God calls His children to just ask.

And when you ask He encourages us to be specific.

The illustrations He uses in this text are bread and fish. Why use these particular illustrations? They represent the common, ordinary needs of life. And they are particular.

Ask God for what you want, specifically.

So many of us are praying for things in such a general way that when our prayers are answered we don’t even know.  When you pray, pray so specifically that when the answer comes, you’ll respond, “Wow! He did it!”

And one more thing…

Be persistent in your prayers.

All three of His commands-ask, seek, knock-would be more aptly translated this way:

“Keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking.”

Don’t ever stop asking, don’t ever stop seeking, don’t ever stop knocking. Just keep at it. Keep bringing your prayers to God. If you think your request is legitimate, keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking.

God wants to teach us through persistent praying to wait on Him and to watch. While we’re praying and waiting for God to answer our prayers, do you know what He’s doing? He’s working on us, conforming us more and more to the image of Christ. And when we’re ready, the answer will surely come.

Remember…

If the request is wrong God says no
If the timing is wrong God says Slow.
If you are wrong God says Grow.
If the request is right, the timing is right and you are right God says GO.
