Psalm 136
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 136
1
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
2
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.

Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
4
to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
5
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
6
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
7
who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
8
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
9
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.
10
to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
11
and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
12
with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.
13
to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
His love endures forever.
14
and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
15
but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.
16
to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.
17
to him who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.

and killed mighty kings—

and gave their land as an inheritance,

He remembered us in our low estate

Give thanks to the God of heaven.

OBSERVATION
This chapter in the book of Psalms is referred to as the “Great Hallel” or “Great Praise”. The Psalmist is praising God for all that He had blessed them with and what He did in the past. The Psalmist remembered all the great and wonderful miracles that God had performed. The same God who freed them from slavery in Egypt, walked with them in the wilderness, and gave them a home and inheritance was still blessing them with food and a plentiful land. He also acknowledged God’s protection from their enemies who were constantly at war with them. Lastly, He was highlighting the love of God. God’s love is everlasting. We read all throughout scripture and even in our daily lives the impact of God’s love towards His people.
APPLICATION
What stood out to me was the fact that psalmist remembered God’s actions through His power and love. As we are going through the “But God” series, this whole chapter is a “But God” statement! Not only did God free the Israelites from bondage, He continued to walk with them because trouble did not stop in Egypt. In our lives, hardship will not stop at the point of salvation, but we have Christ. As we spend time with God today, we should remember our “But God” moments through praise.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I thank You for having love for us. You pursued us, saved us, and walking with us until we get to see You face to face where we will be with You for eternity. Your love truly endures forever!
