February 9, 2020

Our identity as human beings, made in the image of God, is constantly being deconstructed.  Many believers have lost sight or have been fooled by the current thinking regarding who they are.  It is appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are IN CHRIST.

PRAYER REQUESTS

We consider it our privilege to pray for you during the week.  Take a moment to share your prayer requests with us so we can be praying specifically for you.  AND when God answers your prayers will you take a moment to share those stories with us as well.

  • Ephesians 1:1-14 (NIV) 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will– 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment–to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. 11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.

“When you are in Christ, all that is true of Him changes what is true of you.”

What does it mean to be in Christ?

It is a status.

A state of being.

The word “in” is used to describe the state or position of one thing in relation to another.

  • Ephesians 2:4-6 (NIV) 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

So how do you get “in Christ”?

  • John 3:16 (NIV) “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

We believe “into” Jesus.

  • Romans 6:3-4 (NIV) 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

To be in Christ describes your status.

All that is true of Jesus changes all that is true of you.

It is a relationship.

To be in Christ means that you are in relationship with Him.

As we live in Christ (in relationship with Him), we grow into all that is true of us in Christ.

Living in relationship with Jesus changes you.  You will grow into all that He says is true of you.  Being in Christ is more than just a status; it’s a relationship.

We are called to believe and follow.

We are called to be in Christ, in relationship with Jesus, and to grow into all that is true of us.

As we live in Christ (in relationship with Him), we grow into all that is true of us in Christ.

That’s what we’re going to unpack for the next several weeks.
